prayer for a cactus

cactus crossDecember 7, 2014

Soften me
Smooth my spiny surface
Soothe my sharp edges
Calm my prickly sheath
Make me more gentle
More tolerant
Less judging
More accepting
Less defensive
More surrendered
Heal my angry rash
and my rash anger
Forgive me my jabs, stabs, pricks and pokes
Send me a kind cactus wren
And an occasional bright bloom

But we know very well that this natural universe is neither prickles nor goo exclusively: it’s gooey prickles and prickly goo [and] we’re always playing with the two.Alan Watts

You are like a chestnut burr, prickly outside, but silky-soft within, and a sweet kernel, if one can only get at it. Love will make you show your heart some day, and then the rough burr will fall off. -Louisa May Alcott, Little Women

And lest I should be exalted above measure…there was given to me a thorn in the flesh. -2 Corinthians 12:7 (KJV)

You pour out rain in buckets, O God; thorn and cactus become an oasis. -Psalm: 68:9 (MSG)
